Recapping our Doze Day with East Van Roasters
December 26, 2014
It was a very soul warming experience joining Doze Day at EastVan Roasters. This hidden gem is a warm embrace for a cold winter's day. Once I walked in the shop, I was put on the task of winnowing cocoa nibs, that is, peeling the shell off each cocoa bean. The owner of the shop educated us on cocoa and making of chocolate. I did not know that it takes cocoa trees 5 years to yield cocoa nibs, new found respect for chocolate! It was also really cool and interesting to try raw cocoa nibs and freshly roasted ones. I thought my taste buds really got lucky! She also kindly offered tea and some of their chocolate to volunteers. Needless to say, we all stuffed our faces with their products!
I was particularly interested in joining Doze Day for this event not only because of the tasty chocolate, but I was also intrigued in learning that all staff hired were women from the east vancouver community. For those who aren't familiar with the area, this community has a high demographic of halfway homers, low income and the under privileged. I was impressed by their commitment in providing job opportunities for these women. At the same time, these ladies have their pride. They are not charity, they have the best chocolate in town!
This wonderful afternoon was all about winnowing chocolate, making new friends, sharing laughs and stories with all our amazing volunteers, what a treat on cold winter afternoon!
