Announcing Partnership with Karma Teachers
November 12, 2014
We are so excited to announce that we've partnered with another amazing Vancouver organization, Karma Teachers. Karma Teachers is a center for yoga and meditation that offers by donation or free yoga in the downtown eastside community to help enhance the lives of people, especially to those groups that might not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in yoga classes. The center is lovingly run by a collective of yoga teachers committed to selfless action and to giving back to the community.
Karma Teachers opened their doors, in 2011, and has since offered over a thousand free or by donation yoga and meditation classes. They have given hundreds of workshops and events; hosted over 150 volunteer teachers, introduced thousands of students to yoga, and helped transform the many lives of the community that they serve.
Karma Teachers has an open door policy, opening their doors to anyone who is not able to afford yoga. They are not funded or receive grants from the government and keep their doors open by donations from the community and by innovative fundraisers like Yogathons and special events that engage the community.
In the past, Karma Teachers has worked with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Covenant House, and Butterflies in Spirit. KT has special classes for Eating Disorders, Youth Empowerment, Workshop for teaching Kids with Autism, Nutrition,Queer Kundalini and Karma Teachers KIDS. Currently they have programs with Beauty Night Society for Impoverished Women and Kundalini for Mental Health and Addictions. New and expanded programs are launching for Eating Disorders, At-risk Youth, LGBTQ, Aboriginal Youth, and more classes for the general public.
For the public, 6 classes per day are offered (morning and afternoon).
Karma Teachers is on 45 WEST HASTINGS on the top floor of a heritage building in Gastown.
Simply getting to know the team at Karma Teachers has been inspiring in so many ways. Emerson and Michael, the two gentlemen spearheading the organization are the definition of Karma Yoga (yoga in action)- selfless service in other words. We had the opportunity to attend several classes, and the safe space KT provides for authentic expression is incredibly touching. We now make sure to get over to 45 West Hastings weekly, to inspire our souls through one of Michael's philosophy classes or Emerson's ecstatic dance yoga classes.
We encourage you all to be open-minded and open-hearted and attend a class here. It is one of the most inspiring places we have been to in the city.
On November 29 we’ll be joining forces and hosting a Doze Day at Karma Teachers. Stay tuned for more details!
