A day on the Farm - Thank You volunteers!
November 3, 2014
We hope everyone had an awesome Halloween weekend! We were happy to see a few of you out bright and early, even though big festivities took place the night before! What a Doze Day it was, indeed. 10am Southland Farms out in Kerrisdale. Southland Farms is a farm out in South Vancouver. They have all sorts of animals on the farm, grow amazing fruit and vegetables and best of all open their magical space to the public to enjoy building a beautiful sense of community in the Southland area.
When we arrived we were greeted by Jen, one of the owners of the farm. She had a big smile on, grateful to have helpers for the day. She went over some of the tasks that needed to get done and then we set off to work. Our first mission was to collect all the unclaimed pumpkins that were scattered throughout the property and lay them nicely along the fence so that guests could easily see them and purchase them if they were interested to cook up some pumpkin. We also picked out those that had gone bad and threw them into the compost.
Along the way we pit stopped in the garden, ate some jumbo beans, kale and tasted plants we had never seen or heard of before. It was quite the adventure. We also met many of the locals, including Pearl the chicken, Sweater and Mitten the two sheep, Juicy the pig, and Aura and Teddy, two of the many horses that live on the farm.
Southland Farms is a truly magical place. Throughout the day many groups and families visited the farm simply to soak in the farm air and be present in such a peaceful space.
After pumpkin duty we got to work and filled water holes on the main path with sand. Wheel barrowing back and forth several times, eating beans along the way!
Then it was lunch time! Jeff, Southland’s current awesome woofer, cooked us up some yummy yummy lunch. He cooked up a nice warm hearty soup with freshly picked beets from the garden and potatoes. Mmm it was amazing. We enjoyed lunch on the porch while sharing stories, playing with visiting children, becoming friendly with Pearl the domesticated chicken and inhaling the peaceful ambience.
After lunch we were off to work again to clean to barn gutters. First we visited Juicy the pig in the Pig Palace… As I write this, I laugh realizing how awesome this place and our day was! After cleaning out the gutters and cuddling with the horses 4pm rolled around and it was the end of a long but joyful work day. Jen made us some yummy hot chocolate and we enjoyed our beverage on the porch, once again reminiscing life, our journeys, our dreams and feeling deep gratitude for the experience we had. A fun volunteer experience filled with deep meaningful connections, conversations, and work. Until next time Doze goers. Thanks to everyone who made it out.
