The Street Store - Downtown Eastside Market
April 28, 2014
What an incredible day! Yesterday, Sunday, April 27 the Doze squad was at the Downtown Eastside Street Market, celebrating the opening of the Vancouver Street Store. We set up shop around 10:45am and by 11am we had the whole market gathered around waiting for us to open! Over 25 big bags of clothing were donated - to put that into perspective; we had over 60 pairs of women's pants... we had collected over 600 pounds of clothing and accessories! Thank you everyone so much for your contributions, in time and in the clothing donations! The people of the downtown Eastside were beyond happy and grateful for their new wardrobe additions!
The market organizers gave us a tent and several tables to set up on. We split the shop into two sides - men’s wear and women’s wear. All customers were given the option to choose three items from the store for free. It was a success for all participants - the shoppers were happy to have new clothes to wear and the volunteers had a powerful experience integrating with a foreign community. It was a humbling experience as we observed and engaged with new people, learning about the lifestyle and challenges this community faces.
Our booth was a huge hit - men’s clothing was all gone within 20 minutes of opening up the store! Luckily we had people coming to visit the Doze team throughout the day dropping off clothes as the day progressed. The Street Store was a huge success and marks the first of many more to come!
